[ winn was going to contact robb. he was! but then he had to think about what he was gonna say. and then they were attacked. and then he was running around from ship to ship trying to do his best to fix damages. and now...now there's still work to do but it's not as urgent anymore. and he asked kitty to make sure unfortunate timing won't contribute to this going wrong again if that's the way it'll go. and he's out of excuses.
so he settles in the tourist's engine room (aka, his new bedroom) and makes the call. he looks tired but otherwise unharmed, and his tone is gentle, apologetic, from the first word. ]
Hi, uh, I was wondering if I could have a few moments of your time. If now's no good, call me back. I owe you an apology. [ he's still not okay with the way robb treated kitty. he never will be. but he's also not okay with the way he treated robb, and he's learned of extenuating circumstances and correct apologies that were made and he just feels like the biggest jerk. ]
[ If Robb knew what a rollercoaster is he would have described everything that has happened as a rollercoaster ride. It felt as if he got thrown from one thing into another. Raiders and then the sudden appearance of his mother. The damage they caused to the Blue Fish, reparation, trying to recollect his possessions and repair his bed.
When he gets Winn’s message he is dozing off a little, resting against the wall of his small room. The sound the communicator makes prevent him from drifting off completely.
The face on the screen is one he certainly did not expect to see and it makes him frown a little. So much trouble because of this man and his own drunken moment with Kitty. And it is true that the North remembers, and the North likes to hold on to old grudges. But this is not the North anymore and he himself is a dead man.
Finally he calls the other back.]
You may speak.
[The tone of his voice is neutral and the look on his face is a little curious.]
[ great. wonderful. now what? why does he never learn to prepare a script? for such a smart man he really is an idiot sometimes.
he takes a breath, and just speaks from the heart. it carried him through all his fleet conflicts so far, though none of them have gone as far as this one. ]
I lashed out at you, and that was wrong of me. The critical point that I was missing, that I was misunderstanding, was that you've apologized to Kitty which is all that matters in that situation. Apologizing to me was a courtesy, and I appreciate it. Mostly though, I'm really sorry that our conflict complicated your friendship with Kitty, the last thing I want is to come between her and her friends, I know what a gift it is to have her in my life and I have no right or desire to get in the way of her spending time with anyone she chooses. I'm sorry you felt unwelcomed at my party, I want you to know that even without knowing what I do now I wouldn't have kicked you out or made a scene, you don't have to worry about that with me, I never thought what happened meant you deserve to be excluded, or that you're a bad person, I just blew up, and I'm sorry. I don't normally do that.
[A part of Robb wants to be harsh about it. All of this brought so much trouble ant tension. Between Jeyne and him, Kitty and him and indirectly also between this young man and him. But would that help any? To dwell on such things? Of course, the North remembers, but would the North want to keep on remembering this?
He listens with a focused expression on his face.]
I thought it would not be right to attend your feast, ser. When we parted we were not on good terms, I did not know it was a feast to celebrate your name day. You should not apologize for that.
[His shoulders slump a little while he tries to determine if he should be courteous and formal like a king, or if he should be a guy called Robb Stark who once has been king. It is still a difficult thing.]
Well, if someone would try to touch my lady wife’s teats...I would blow up as well. Gods...I would probably put him to the sword. [Robb is known for having quite an awful temper at times.] I cannot deny it caused me a lot of trouble. But that was mostly because of me being a fool than you wishing to protect the woman you have lost your heart to.
[He sighs again.]
I do agree. It was a misunderstanding, but I do not wish to dwell on it for too long. And neither should you, ser.
[ winn listens quietly, still looking apologetic as he's told not to apologize because he does feel bad robb had to leave - he doesn't want to exclude anyone who doesn't really deserve it, anyone who hasn't really done evil. robb did wrong, for certain - yes, he understands his circumstances now and he did apologize but no circumstances give anyone the write to treat another person poorly - but he definitely did not do evil. and it was never his intention to drag this further than just between them, but robb had no way of knowing that because winn was speaking from anger, not thought, and that's his wrong doing.
there's a flash of concern at put them to the sword - it's so quick it could easily be missed but yikes, he makes a mental note to try to keep an amicable relationship with this guy from now on and really, let kara talk to him next time if there's a next time because the last thing he needs is to get in a violent altrecation over a misunderstanding. he's not a violent man! (not that he would ever try to touch his wife's...anything. unless she needed a hand, in which case he'll touch her hand, but that's it. he also has no idea who his wife is, he looks so young to have one...god he hates westeros and the way it treats women and marriage). contrition returns to his face at the mention of the trouble it caused him - yes he did wrong, but again, winn wasn't exactly clean here, either, and he's lived his life trying to avoid making problems for anyone.
he nods and return a small smile of his own at the end. ]
I'd like that. Next time you're on the Tourist, I'll take you straight to Jim.
[To Robb it is a very simple, normal thing to put a man to the sword. If they wronged him, they should be punished. At least, that was how it was in Westeros. And Winn has barely done Robb wrong. It was just a poorly timed meeting. He hasn’t come here to play the king and parade through ships with his crown on his head.
He quite likes it to be Robb. It has been a long time since he has been able to embrace who he really was.]
I would like that as well.
[There is a sigh of relief coming from his mouth and he shifts behind the communicator.]
Well, you may speak to me as well, if I come by to see Jim. [He raises his hands.] I truly do not wish to dwell on this and make things needlessly difficult. I have left many difficulties behind, it would be folly to bring them here.
[ winn really dislikes westeros. he cares for its people, but the culture is pretty much one of the worst he can imagine. ]
This is a strictly no folly zone, so I gotta agree with you there. [ his smile turns warmer. he's much better at getting along with people. ] If you wanna come by and talk to me, I'll be happy to do that too.
[That makes Robb snort with laughter. He should remember those words. A no folly zone.]
Heh, I will remember that when great folly arises.
[Robb nods slowly at Winn’s words, still smiling. All in all he seems like a good man. Kitty has chosen wisely after all that has happened to her. May she never be forced to return home.]
I will definitely do so. [He stops nodding.] You are always welcome to stop by here as well.
[ laughter, five points! there's a hint of pride on winn's face for making him laugh. he tips his head at him, as if to say go ahead, my gift to you.
winn is doing everything in his power to make sure kitty never has to and once he has that road back to national city set up - he'll extend it to anyone who can't go back to their own home. his earth is already kind of a refuge anyway, for aliens. ]
I will, don't think I've ever been to your neck of the fleet before, I'm overdue.
[ if only to seal the end of the awkwardness. they don't have to be best friends (and really that position has been filled for winn three years ago, back home) but he does really want them to get along. ]
